A backup mail server receives emails in the event that a message is not delivered to your primary mail server. 
Reasons your messages are not be delivered to your primary mail server may be due to network outages or your primary mail server is undergoing maintenance.

All we need is your domain name and your destination SMTP Server hostname or IP Address.

A secondary MX record is set up on your domain as the fall back mail server.
If your mail server is down, messages are delivered to the secondary server.  During this period, the secondary mail server collects all mail delivered to your mail addresses and constantly checks to see the status of your primary server.
If your Primary Server should come alive once again, the messages will be delivered to the Primary server.
